Secure your computer from viruses
Most of us have probably at some point downloaded a virus or spyware onto our computers without intentionally doing so. By simply being connected online there is a risk of a nasty bug being downloaded onto the system. There are many different types of viruses – files with the purpose of harming your PC or for criminal activity. For instance, a worm is a computer program that can automatically copy itself onto other computers via the Internet, causing your machine to malfunction. A Trojan Horse can appear in the form of a normal file containing malicious code, enabling a hacker to take control of the infected PC. Spyware is a form of virus designed to steal specific information from the user’s PC, such as for fraudulent purposes.
There are preventive measures you can take to stop viruses infecting your computer. Never open suspicious emails that have come from an unknown sender, instead delete them straight away. Try to be careful when downloading free software or files from the Internet, particularly if they have not come from the main source. Take caution when plugging in USBs or inserting CDs/DVDs. Ensure you back up your files regularly just in case they do get lost and can’t be recovered.
